MONDAY 03/12/12 - evaluating sources, annotations, research

I. Review types of claims.

  • Definitional arguments

II. Immigrant Misappropriations (CR p. 248)

  1. Work with a partner to write a summary of the  main point Kang is trying to get across. Post on your blog.
  2. Imagine you were working on an exploratory paper devoted to one of the following topics. Chose one and extract the perspective that Kang's essay suggests:
  • the view on Baseball as the American Sport
  • the of life racial and ethnic stereotypes in sports
  • the social markers of true Americanness
    3. Together with your partner write an annotation with the chosen topic in mind.

      III. Research
    • Research a few terms and names from Kang's paper you did not know. How did your research illuminate your understanding of the article?
    • Research terms "Asian American", immigrant, and sports using Acadmic Search Premier article database. What kind of articles to you get?

      •  ~~~     Draw a wavy line under or beside words/sections that are problematic.
      •  ? ? ?     Put a “?” in the margin by something you have a question about.
      • After the writer finishes reading, take a couple of minutes to look back through your marks and write brief comments explaining
        • what worked well
        • what was problematic
        •  what your question was
      • Spend a few minutes looking into the author's posted questions and respond to the author's concerns on their blog, discussing the comments you've made.
      • Give the paper with written comments to the writer.
      • AT HOME, REVIEW ANOTHER PEER'S PAPER USING THE HANDOUT!
